Hypothermia is defined as a medical condition in which the body's core temperature drops below normal levels. The most common cause of hypothermia is exposure to low temperatures for a sustained period of time. This can happen in a variety of situations, such as being outside in cold weather without proper protection or being in cold water for an extended period of time. High body temperature, or hyperthermia, is actually the opposite of hypothermia and can be caused by heat stroke or fever. Allergic reactions and dehydration are also not directly related to hypothermia and would not be considered common causes.
